The 2009/10 Season Begins
The 2009/10 Ski Season Begins
The ski season will begin locally on Saturday 12/19 when Berkshire East opens. Some of the bigger mountains up north have been open for a week or more with pretty good conditions reported by skiers who have stopped at the shop. I hope to be able to ski on opening day but that depends on how busy the shop is. I am looking forward to another great seaon this year...and I hope to improve enough so as to not embarrass or hurt myself!!!

After the snowstorm yesterday (1-29) I got to go skiing at Berkshire East today with Keith, Liam and Knoepfchen. Keith came to pick me up at 8:00 in the morning so that I could help him find the ski area, while Knoepfchen and Liam drove up in their cars and met us at the mountain. After getting the lift tickets I decided to head over to Top Notch to practice some of the more advanced skills that alpine skiing requires while Keith, Liam and Knoepfchen went out on their own to ski other parts of the mountain.

Skiing and Snowshoeing 1-22-09
Winter Activity Reports

Friday, 23 January 2009

Thursday 1-22-09 was indeed a very busy day for me. I got up early to head to Berkshire East to ski with Liam and I was among the first few people to arrive in the parking lot. I gathered my skis and headed over to the ski patrol building to wait for Liam to arrive. It was 8:15 in the morning and the lifts had not started yet so I went and got my ticket at the lodge and then returned to the patrol building to wait for Liam. I was downstairs in the patrol building putting on my boots when I heard the upstairs door open. I thought it was Liam coming to get me but it was Jan who came down the stairs to greet me. We chatted for a few minutes and then Liam arrived.

Alpine Skiing at Berkshire East-Part II
Winter Activity Reports

Wednesday, 21 January 2009

I had two outings on alpine skis last week and I have to admit that the experience has been enlightening for me. I have always believed that I had an understanding of how others felt when learning to ride a bike, but I now have a new relevant experience of my own to temper my view of others. I took a ski lesson the first time I went skiing and I learned a lot from Steve Nickoski, who helped me, feel confident on my skis while navigating the “bunny hill”.

Today we got a good foot of fluffy new snow so I decided to head up to Berkshire East to do some skiing. I haven’t skied in 20 years so I thought it wise to take a lesson and I hired Steve Nickoski to teach me. I got to the mountain at 8:30 and after a few minutes Steve arrived for my lesson. We hiked over to the “bunny” hill and Steve taught me a few things about skiing with the new “shaped skis”. I did a couple of practice maneuvers and then we headed down the hill. I managed to ski (if you call controlled sliding, skiing) down the hill to the double chair lift.

Sunday, 02 March 2008

Today we had a snowshoe hike at Wendell State Forest. Joining me was MaryEllen, Helen, Sue O’Connor, Hammerhead and Melissa Green, Parrott, Nice Kate and Sophie, Jenn Bond as well as Eddie, Ellie, Cooper and Gus the dogs (although it could be argued that Parrott might be included in that last group as well.) We left the parking area and headed off on the X-C trail with MaryEllen and Helen in the lead.

Snowshoe Hike to the Coke Plant 2-24
Winter Activity Reports

Sunday, 24 February 2008

Since yesterday’s snowstorm pretty much knocked our outdoor riding off the calendar for the next week or so, I decided to do a snowshoe hike today, instead. I called Curt yesterday while he and Jamie were drinking… err making 5 gallons of beer. I have found that when Jamie and Curt are up to their beer drinking... I mean making ways; they are the most receptive to my activity suggestions. This usually has a 50% success rate with these two guys and I was only able to convince Curt to join me today. MaryEllen and Helen have been doing these Sunday afternoon hikes by themselves for the last several weeks and the agreed to join me and Curt. I called Bonnie Welcome and she also was game for the hike.
