The ski season will begin locally on Saturday 12/19 when Berkshire East opens. Some of the bigger mountains up north have been open for a week or more with pretty good conditions reported by skiers who have stopped at the shop. I hope to be able to ski on opening day but that depends on how busy the shop is. I am looking forward to another great seaon this year...and I hope to improve enough so as to not embarrass or hurt myself!!!
First Runs of the 2009-10 Season

I went up to Berkshire East for my first runs of the year on
Sunday 12-20-09. I was a little nervous about this since there has not been
much snow this year and I am sporting new skis and boots. I am not the most
skillful skier in the world and if it is icy I tend to not do to well, so
caution is the word for the day. I arrived at the ski area just before 9:00 am and
after getting booted up I went into the lodge to get a lift ticket.
The lodge
was pretty full of people and I got to say hi to lots of friends and customers
before heading out to the slopes. I opted to head over to Exhibition instead of
taking the triple lift up to the top of the mountain so that I would have a
chance to do some easy runs before I take on the challenging terrain. I skied
over to the Topnotch lift which puts me out on Exhibition. My new boots felt a
little uncomfortable as I rode up the lift but the fist few turns went well and
the boots felt OK. I skied over to the quad and I noticed how easily my new
Hart Pulse skis turned on the groomed slopes. As I got ready to get on the lift
I was surprised to see Robin Armstrong was the lift operator. Robin used to
ride with us and he and his dad are long time customers of the shop. I got on
the lift and rode to the top to do my first long run of the year. I was a
little tentative at first but after a couple of turns I headed down the hill
with no problems. The snow guns were blowing at the top of the hill and I skied
through soft snow for the first half of the hill and then I got out onto the
firmer, groomed surface and skied down to the bottom. I made several runs
before Brice and Ed Ralicki showed up at the top of the hill. I skied down the
hill with them and they gave me some advice on my “technique”. I still am
learning how to carve and I have lots of bad form to overcome so I really
appreciate the help that I get from the more experienced skiers. We made a
couple of runs down Exhibition and then we headed over to Chief. I did OK on
the steeper hill but I have a long way to go before I can make any claim of
proficiency. I only made the one run down Chief before I had to head back to Greenfield to open the
shop. When I got to the bottom of the hill there were a lot of people waiting
in the lift line. Kenny Burdick came over to say hello and he noticed my new
skis. I showed him the nifty new Vist bindings. He seemed to like them so I
left my skis with Ken so he could try them out. Before I left the hill I got to
say hello to Hammerhead, Liam, Bob A, and a whole bunch of the patrollers. I
thought that overall the snow conditions were pretty good and I was happy to
have had the opportunity to get out and ski before the holidays.
