The 2009/10 Season Begins
The 2009/10 Ski Season Begins
The ski season will begin locally on Saturday 12/19 when Berkshire East opens. Some of the bigger mountains up north have been open for a week or more with pretty good conditions reported by skiers who have stopped at the shop. I hope to be able to ski on opening day but that depends on how busy the shop is. I am looking forward to another great seaon this year...and I hope to improve enough so as to not embarrass or hurt myself!!!

I went up to Berkshire East a little later than usual today and that probably was a good thing for me because I got more sleep and was pretty rested when I got to the slopes. I got booted up and headed out the door to put my skis on. This was my first time on twin tips and I was a little uncertain of how I would do with them. I stepped into the bindings and skied over to the triple chair lift where I met up with Ed Ralicki. We got on the lift and headed up the hill. It was a cloudy day but the temps were in the upper twenties which made the ride to the top of the mountain very comfortable.

When we exited the chair lift Ed and I headed down the Outback Trail and I practiced making my turns. As we made our way down the gentle slopes on top of the mountain Ed Galvin came along and briefly joined us. I was surprised at how easily I was turning and I actually was skiing instead of just sliding down the hill. I was able to ski down the hill without crashing and I even made it down the steeper pitches without feeling like I was out of control. My Rossignol Sin 3 skis seemed to be easier to turn and I was at the bottom of the hill in no time, although I did get going pretty fast on the last downhill section of Roundabout and I had to slow down before I got to the quad chair lift. Ed and I rode up the quad with Ken Burdick with Richard Sanders in the chair behind us. When we got to the top of the hill it was time to tackle the dreaded Exibition hill. I have had trouble getting down this hill and for the most part I have either fallen or had to stop several times going down the hill. Ed skied with me over to the top of the hill and he gave me some pointers on how to make my turns to control my speed. He kept right behind me and coached me to keep my body upright and to keep my weight on the turning ski. Ed had me use my poles to keep track of how I was using the weighted ski to turn. This was like a light coming on!! I now got it and although it was not pretty, I managed to ski down the hill without stopping. I repeated this two more times with Ed and each time I did, I felt much more in control of my skies. Ed was behind me and he kept telling me to stand up straight and relax when I finished my turn. This helped me a lot and I was feeling pretty good about my efforts. I made it down the hill more smoothly and a bit faster with each run. Finally, after several runs, Ed said it was time for me to go "solo". I was a little nervous at first but I kept my mind focused on what I had just learned and I headed down the hill by myself, with Ed not far behind. After the run it was time for Ed to head off for his duties on the Ski Patrol. After Ed left I made two more trips up the hill and I made it from top to bottom without any difficulties and without anyone helping me. It was a great day, the first time I had actually skied without feeling out of control or crashing.
